Bitcoin’s Isolation Coming to an End? LayerZero’s Game-Changing Move to Connect with Rootstock

LayerZero to Bridge Bitcoin via Rootstock
Published On: February 20, 2025By

In a significant development for the cryptocurrency ecosystem, bridging protocol LayerZero is preparing to integrate with Bitcoin sidechain Rootstock, marking its first connection to the original blockchain that started it all.

The move aims to address a longstanding challenge in the crypto world – Bitcoin’s inability to natively support smart contracts, which has kept it somewhat isolated from the broader blockchain universe despite being the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

Rootstock, designed specifically as a Bitcoin sidechain, will now be connected to LayerZero’s extensive network, potentially opening Bitcoin to interoperability with over 100 blockchains including major players like Ethereum and Solana.

This connection could unlock new possibilities for Bitcoin holders, allowing the massive liquidity locked in BTC to flow more freely into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. For developers, this means being able to build applications on Rootstock that can communicate with numerous other blockchains.

The integration addresses what many see as a critical impediment to wider cryptocurrency adoption – the fact that Bitcoin, which holds more value than all other blockchains combined, has remained largely disconnected from the innovation happening across other networks.

With this new bridge in place, the barriers between Bitcoin and the rest of the crypto universe may finally begin to crumble, potentially catalyzing a new wave of development and investment in Bitcoin-compatible DeFi applications.
