Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin Defend Bitcoin Pioneer Facing Possible Life Sentence Over Tax Charges
In a surprising show of solidarity across crypto divides, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has joined industry veterans in condemning the potential life imprisonment facing early Bitcoin investor Roger Ver.
Ver, once nicknamed “Bitcoin Jesus” for his evangelical promotion of cryptocurrency, faces severe tax fraud charges that could result in him spending the rest of his life behind bars—a punishment Buterin and others are calling drastically disproportionate.
“Going to prison for the rest of your life over non-violent tax offenses is absurd,” Buterin stated on social media. “The case against Roger seems very politically motivated; like with Ross Ulbricht, there have been plenty of people and corporations who have been accused of far worse and yet faced sentences far milder than what Roger is facing.”

The controversy has united typically disparate voices in the crypto world, with recently pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht declaring that no one should “spend the rest of their life in prison over taxes,” despite his own history with the justice system.
Kraken founder Jesse Powell echoed these sentiments, suggesting personal vendettas may be driving the prosecution. “The reality is, they just don’t like him and they want to get him, and they will use any excuse they can to get him or make his life hell for as long as they can,” Powell stated.
Ver and his legal team are fighting back, maintaining that the charges represent a politically motivated attack rather than a legitimate prosecution.
The case raises troubling questions about proportionality in sentencing for financial crimes compared to other offenses, with many observers noting that violent criminals often receive lighter sentences than those proposed for Ver’s alleged non-violent tax violations.
As the crypto community rallies behind Ver, the situation highlights ongoing tensions between cryptocurrency advocates and regulatory authorities, potentially setting the stage for a landmark legal battle that could impact how similar cases are handled in the future.
